Why have a website?

The majority of people searching for a product or service now start with a Google search. Relatively few start by searching other online directories, or a printed directory.

Being represented by your own informative website, directly in the search results, will provide prospective customers with a clearer picture of your business than a relatively limited listing in one of the various online directories. Often, to get to such a listing will require navigating a “category” listing of the directory which includes your competitors.

Paying for position within such directories can help only when your prospective customer actually selects the directory category. If they select a competitor’s website directly from Google instead (increasingly likely as more businesses get websites), it won’t help at all.

The mobile revolution

According to a recent survey by Google, 1/3 of New Zealanders access the internet daily from their mobile phone

Use of smart-phones has increased rapidly over the last three years, and now represents a significant, and still rapidly growing, proportion of website visitors.

To cater for this growing population of mobile web browsers, sites are developed as “mobile-friendly” as standard — that is, while the page will appear as a normal web page on a computer screen, it will adapt to a small mobile phone display so that the user is not required to zoom in and out to find their way around the page. The navigation links are enlarged to make them easier to operate on a touch screen, among other adaptations.

Speed is particularly critical for mobile users too, as is minimising bandwidth consumed (your mobile viewers will appreciate the cost saving). This is addressed by minimising unnecessary features, and careful optimisation of images.
